Vehicles and roadways are very different from what they were 50 years ago and the laws have not kept up. I have been through three teens learning to drive and survived. However I feel extorted because in most places there is no alternative to driving, so I am forced to buy cars, pay tax and license, inspection, and insurance high enough to break us because two of our kids are male. And who benefits from all this? Certainly not us. I'll have to put driving lessons into the last (and third) of my series of Angela books (set in a coastal Texas high school).
