The Empire State Building Impresses Our Teens

Day Two of our mom and teen girls New York City getaway started with a cab ride to the Empire State Building. Opened in 1931, the building screams art deco from the moment you enter the gilded lobby to the classic elevators and the 102nd-floor glass and steel aerie that had us looking for King Kong. Measuring 1,454 feet to the top of the spire, it remains the third tallest building in the United States. We had heard about the lines that can stretch for hours, but when we arrived near 10 am on a hazy weekday morning there were no lines to be found. The Upper East Side of Manhattan parallels the eastern side Central Park from 59th Street to 96th Street, stretching to meet the East River. We spent the first afternoon of our mom and teen girls’ getaway exploring Central Park and the Metropolitan Museum of Art before heading to Serendipity 3 for dinner. We entered Central Park at 6th Avenue and Central Park Drive which took us past the Statue of Cuban Patriot Jose Julian Marti. We followed winding, flowering trails along the Pond, finding boulders to scramble along the way. We walked through the Dairy Visitor Center and Gift Shop and continued along the shaded walks of the Dene and the meadow of the East Green. After much planning and plotting our mom and teen girls’ getaway to New York City was a major success! Our regular readers know we spent weeks doing research and checking out web sites, twitter and guide books. If you need some ideas, read our trip planning pages for inspiration on New York City hotels and tours, iconic experiences, and teen friendly restaurants, attractions, and shopping destinations. NYC Food, Culture and Shopping for Teens and Tweens

Our teens and moms girls adventure to New York City is getting close. With the hotel and Broadway show set, and going to the top of the Empire State building identified as our number one priority, its time to think about where to eat, shop and take advantage of the cultural opportunities that only the Big Apple has to offer. Here is the short list of New York City teen and tween treasures we considered for our trip. In New York City it is impossible for even teens to get bored, as long as they get to help pick what they do. Mom might love the idea of going to an opera while teens and friends might rather shop. As always, we think considering a range of options and letting the teens have a big impact on the choices is the way to go. For years, our local middle school offered the 7th grade class a rite of passage, i.e. a one night, jam packed bus trip to New York City. Leaving at 5 am on day 1 and returning at midnight on day 2 this was often the first trip away from home without parents for many of the 12 and 13 year olds in the class. Alas, the New York trip is no more but we’ve decided to recreate it as best we can for our budding teen and a friend during the upcoming Spring break.
