Ever since we got back from Alaska #1 Son has been getting seriously focused on the whole college application process. Over the last year, we have opportunistically visited a number of local schools, but now it’s time to get on the road to see schools a bit farther afield. Looking at the map, it appears we’ve got road trips to New Jersey, Maryland, Washington DC, and New York State in our near future. The colleges all look great, but, hey, wait a minute? What if he ends up attending one of them and brings a car along? He could be hundreds of miles from home with no family available to bail him out if car trouble hits! One of the options we’ve been thinking about to keep him safe on [...]

About a year ago we wrote about suffering through driving lessons with teens with our oldest teen.    At the time, the goal was to drive around the block without having an accident.  Since then, #1 Son has successfully passed his tests, safely survived our state’s six month driving probation period and moved on to having full driving privileges which include  the opportunity to drive himself and friends to wherever they feel like going.  We are lucky that in our case this generally involves local driving to movies, school activities and other nearby events. For the most part things have gone pretty well, if we overlook a small unexpected encounter with the side of the garage and a couple of times when the car lights got left on longer than they [...]

When School Calendars and Vacations Collide: An Alaskan Case Study

Regular readers know we spent a good part of the winter planning  a family cruise vacation to Alaska to coincide with the end of the school year and the princess’s graduation from Middle School.  Although we built some buffer time into the schedule, the brutal Northeast winter of 2010-2011 was more aggressive than we expected.   As the snow days piled up graduation and end of year events got pushed further and further out on the calendar until we had to choose – graduation or the cruise?!?      We know there are many family travelers out there who would probably have ditched graduation but we went the other way.  With a myriad of work, camp, college visits and personal commitments hemming in the rest of our shortened summer travel season we bit [...]

The CDC Says: "Heads Up" When Teens Play Sports

Concussions are never far from our mind when we see a hockey player, skier or snowboarder take a bad fall.  We’ve known more than one teen who has suffered from a concussion and lost weeks or even months from school, sports, friends and family travel.  The ones who have suffered the most came back to sports too soon and got injured a second time before the first concussion was fully healed.       With these experiences in mind, we’re taking a break from our usual travel discussions to make our readers aware of an important concussion awareness program currently being promoted by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) under the banner of “Heads Up”.      The CDC is enlisting bloggers like us to help increase awareness of what concussions are [...]

The College Search Continues ....

Our regular readers know that we undertook a small  flurry of  college tours last fall as #1 Son entered his junior year of high school.  The colleges were selected mostly because they were potential schools for him and were only an hour or two from home.   Our goal was to give him a little insight into the range of college and university experiences available,  in an effort to help formulate priorities and target the search — even as our house and his email account were being flooded with direct mail generated by last October’s PSATs.  Parents, tutors and advisors added more possibilities to the pile.  At one point, more than 30 schools were on the list – although we knew we would never visit them all.      We have been thrilled to find that the process of visiting a [...]
