Arbortrek Canopy Tour a Thrill for Teens at Smugglers' Notch

Smugglers’ Notch ski and snowboard resort offers a wide range of off-slope activities for the whole family.  One of the most recent additions is the Arbortrek Canopy Tour, a 4-season thrill ride featuring 4,500 feet of ziplines, skybridges and rappeling through the forest valley below the Notch.    As part of our visit to Smuggs, the Arbortrek team offered #1 son the opportunity to take the 3-hour tour.      The tour is open to kids as young as 8.  Kids and teens under age 16 need to have an adult along while 17 and 18 year olds can participate on their own as long as mom or dad signs a waiver.    On #1 son’s tour the group was a mix of adults and families with teenage or college age kids.   The [...]

Favorite iPhone Apps for Travels with Teens

In our family, iPhones and iTouches have become top priority travel gear.  For the adults, real time access to directions and the ability to instantly look up nearby restaurants and activities is critical.  For the teens, hours in the car speed by when they have their music and games at hand.      Our teens almost always have a school reading assignment to work on, even in the summer as our schools assign a number of required vacation reading books to middle school and high school students.  We make sure they stay on top of school work.  Beyond that, we don’t lose much sleep about whether the apps they are using have an educational value – for us its all about keeping peace in the car or killing time on planes [...]

Tweens Love Golf at Kimball Farm

Golf is one of those activities that can captivate tweens for hours.  We are not sure why, but they all seem to love hitting those little white balls, even if they are not very good at it.   As a result, when the tween aged cousins came to visit recently, we decided it was great excuse for a trip to Kimball Farm in Westford, MA, about 35 miles from Boston.       Once know primarily for amazingly large and tasty ice cream concoctions, Kimball Farm’s Westford, MA location has become a major eastern Massachusetts family entertainment destination where golf, in many forms, is the main event.  Other locations in Carlisle, MA, Jaffrey, NH and Lancaster, MA are mostly limited to ice cream, food and a little shopping.      At the Kimball Farm Westford location, tween [...]

A Duck's Eye View of Boston

Boston Duck Tours takes visitors on an 80 minute ride in a W.W. II style amphibious landing vehicle.  Although the tour provides lots of insight into Boston’s historic past, the concluding cruise on the Charles River is the main attraction.      We had taken a Duck Tour with our kids when they were 8 and 11 so when out of town cousins ages 8 and 10 came to visit we thought it would be a fun activity (we paid our own way).  We had a beautiful day and Boston never looked better.  The ride took us past many Boston landmarks in the old West End, Beacon Hill and the Back Bay, but, with the exception of the voyage down the river, which really was a thrill, we have to admit we were [...]

Jackson, NH Eagle Mountain House: Dinner with a View

Visiting the Mount Washington Valley, NH with teens and tweens often involves a lot of climbing, hiking, and general racing around.  After a day of ziplines, gondolas, alpine slides, bungee trampolines, climbing walls and hiking both parents and teen appreciated the opportunity to slow down and savour the historic charms of the almost century-old  93-room Eagle Mountain House grand hotel in Jackson, NH.    Located halfway between bustling North Conway and Mount Washington, the town of Jackson hearkens back to a more elegant era of grand hotels, golf courses and scenic views.  It is easy to drive past Jackson on your way up and down busy Route 16, but whether you are stopping to visit the lovely Jackson Falls, grab lunch or dinner at one of the many [...]

Cafe Noche: Serves Up a Mexican Fiesta in Conway, NH

If you are visiting the Mount Washington Valley, NH and looking for a restaurant that can satisfy the teens, tweens and adults in your group, check out the Mexican experience at Cafe Noche on Main Street in Conway, NH.  Locally owned and operated Cafe Noche offers up great food, drinks and service in a  fun, festive setting that we all enjoyed.       Walking in the door, the creative, colorful, wall to wall displays of mexican artwork, photos, collectibles and trinkets immediately gets your attention.  Virtually every inch of wall space, as well as windows, shelves and sideboards are filled.   The same attention to detail that owner Thomas Kugel has put into the decor has also been devoted to stocking the bar and creating the menu.      For adults, there are dozens of tequila and [...]
