When it rains on a summer’s day at the Jersey Shore, many families on vacation either hunker down with books and board games or head out to the mall or the movies. The last time it rained when we were in Wildwood we found virtually everyone at the Shore decided to go to the local theater and it was packed! Instead of waiting in line to see a movie we were not even interested in watching, we jumped in the car and headed up the coast to Atlantic City – it turned out to be a great way to beat the rain. Known mostly as an adult destination due to its concentration of casinos and adult entertainment venues, Atlantic City also offers a lot to families with teens and tweens. [...]

The Sandy Hook unit of the Gateway National Seashore represents the most northern reach of the Jersey Shore. The six mile barrier beach sand spit extends into lower New York Bay, south of Manhattan. The southern end of Sandy Hook hosts a number of fishing and bathing beaches while the northern end is home to a range of historic military sites. Whether you are looking for swimming, history, nature or biking you can find it on Sandy Hook. And, the sunsets are pretty awesome too! Most people access the Hook via car, although shuttle buses do connect the park to the Seastreak high speed NY-NJ ferry in the summer. Lifeguards oversee the main ocean swimming beaches from 10 am to 6 pm between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Be advised that Gunnison [...]

Point Pleasant, NJ beckons families with teens and tweens to spend a day or a week at its family friendly boardwalk and stunning beaches. Like Belmar to the north, Point Pleasant’s beaches are wide and well cared for with life guards, bathhouses, rentals and lots of food and diversions available. Or, you can pack a cooler, bring your own chairs, umbrella, sun hats, a good book and a boogie board and settle in for the day! The Jenkinson’s Boardwalk family friendly emporium of arcades, rides, mini golf and games of chance adds the classic boardwalk experience, supplemented by a lovely aquarium and a few sit down restuarants with ocean views. It isn’t unusual to see dolphins playing in the surf and the beach level Martell’s Tiki Bar serves up some great burgers and drinks on [...]

The mile long beach in Belmar, NJ, located off Garden State Parkway Exit 98, at the northern end of the Jersey Shore, is one of the widest, best maintained, teen and tween friendly beach options we have found. We keep going back year after year to enjoy the mix of sun, surf and sunshine in a Jersey Shore community that manages to keep its beachfront open and inviting and free of over-development. Unlike many beach towns that have allowed stores, restaurants, bars and housing to take over the beach view, Belmar does not allow anything more than single story buildings directly on the boardwalk, and they are limited, allowing for great views from the street as well as the beach. It is part of what gives the town that old fashion, down [...]
