Family Fun for College Tours in Maine

          The University of Maine, in the capital of Augusta, is the state’s flagship campus.  The area is surrounded by lakes, ponds, and the Kennebec River that provide lots of opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, swimming and boating in the warmer months.  Visitors may rent canoes and kayaks from Belgrade Canoe & Kayak about 20 minutes outside Augusta.         If you are a history major you might be interested in visiting 254-year-old Old Fort Western which was built in 1754.  It is the nation’s oldest surviving wooden fort. Jersey Shore Daytrip to South Street Seaport

     The northern reaches of the Jersey Shore in Monmouth and Ocean counties are well connected to New York City via trains, buses, highways and ferries.  If your tribe is ready for a break from the beach (or the weather is not cooperating) consider heading north to the high speen catamaran  Seastreak ferry from Highlands, NJ  for the 40 minute ride to Pier 11 at Wall Street near the South Street Seaport.  Our teen and tween had never visited New York so the trip to South Street Seaport , on the site of the former Fulton Fish Market, was a big thrill.
