Smugglers' Notch: Wishing We Were Here

With the ending of the Red Sox’s baseball season and the weather turning cooler in New England, we’ve been starting to think about ski country destinations for the coming winter.  With one teen that snowboards, one that skis, and mom and dad sometimes looking for less strenuous activities, we need a destination that offers lots of options.   Smugglers’ Notch, in Vermont’s Green Mountains, with 3 mountains and over 300 acres of trails, is a four season resort that caters to families with kids of all ages, and really makes an effort to offer teens and tweens some fun and unique opportunities.      We particularly like the fact that the resort’s Snow University ski school treats teens and tweens differently from younger kids.  Tweens and younger teens ages 11 to [...]

New England Foliage Weekend Ideas

New England’s foliage season is already  in full force in the northern reaches of Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire.  The central portions of those states will most likely  peak right around  Columbus Day.   In the later part of October the colors will roll across central Massachusetts and then on to Cape Cod, Rhode Island and Connecticut.       If you are hoping for a family getaway to look at the leaves recognize that teens and tweens are probably going to need more activity than is provided simply by driving up and down New England’s scenic highways.   Our suggestion is to target an area that can provide a mix of scenery, outdoor activity and some thrills for teens and tweens.       Some of our favorite leaf peeping locations include New Hampshire’s Mount Washington Valley, [...]

Mixing College Tours with Family Fun in Mystic Country

Between searching out new ideas for family fun with our teens, and making plans to check out colleges, we’ve been doing a lot of travel research lately and are coming up with what look like some great ideas.  The Mystic Country area of coastal Connecticut recently peaked our interest as a place that offers a nice mix of history, adventure and fun to keep families with teens and tweens on the move and under sail — whether taking a break from college visits or just looking for a weekend getaway from New York or Boston.      In terms of colleges,  Connecticut College, Mitchell College and the US Coast Guard Academy are all in New London, next store to Mystic.   Many other schools are within an hour’s drive including Wesleyan University Middletown, CT and University of [...]

Tweens Love Golf at Kimball Farm

Golf is one of those activities that can captivate tweens for hours.  We are not sure why, but they all seem to love hitting those little white balls, even if they are not very good at it.   As a result, when the tween aged cousins came to visit recently, we decided it was great excuse for a trip to Kimball Farm in Westford, MA, about 35 miles from Boston.       Once know primarily for amazingly large and tasty ice cream concoctions, Kimball Farm’s Westford, MA location has become a major eastern Massachusetts family entertainment destination where golf, in many forms, is the main event.  Other locations in Carlisle, MA, Jaffrey, NH and Lancaster, MA are mostly limited to ice cream, food and a little shopping.      At the Kimball Farm Westford location, tween [...]

A Duck's Eye View of Boston

Boston Duck Tours takes visitors on an 80 minute ride in a W.W. II style amphibious landing vehicle.  Although the tour provides lots of insight into Boston’s historic past, the concluding cruise on the Charles River is the main attraction.      We had taken a Duck Tour with our kids when they were 8 and 11 so when out of town cousins ages 8 and 10 came to visit we thought it would be a fun activity (we paid our own way).  We had a beautiful day and Boston never looked better.  The ride took us past many Boston landmarks in the old West End, Beacon Hill and the Back Bay, but, with the exception of the voyage down the river, which really was a thrill, we have to admit we were [...]

A Summer's Eve at Boston's Historic Waterfront

Although Boston winters are cold and snowy, a warm summer’s evening visiting the city’s historic waterfront area is a relaxing way to spend time with your teens and tweens.   The centerpiece of the area is the famed Faneuil Hall and  Quincy Market food and shopping district, located in buildings that date back to the 1820s.  This is a good place to look for souvenirs or to grab a snack from an extensive and often crowded food court.  But don’t limit your visit just to Fanueil Hall as there is a lot more history and local color nearby.     For example, just a couple of blocks outside the market   you’ll come upon a small cobblestone side road known as the Blackstone Block.  Somehow, despite centuries of urban renewal and re-development efforts, this tiny fragment of Boston’s colonial past has [...]
