Finished-School_Press-KitAgain this year, over 100 travel bloggers are banding together during the holiday season to raise money for a good cause.  Last the year, this group raised over $110,000 for Water.org!  This year, the goal is to  raise $115,000 for buildOn to construct three schools and fund three adult literacy programs in the Sikasso region of southern Mali, Africa.  The Passports With Purpose program selected buildOn for its 2 decades long track record of mobilizing rural communities in some of the poorest countries in the world to build 567 schools.

The fun part for you travel blog readers is the way this fundraiser works. Simply visit the Prize Catalog page on the Passports with Purpose website to see all the great prizes that travel bloggers and their sponsors have donated for the fundraiser.  For a $10 you get  one “raffle ticket” in a drawing to win the prize of your choice.  Chances of winning a specific prize depend on how many people make a donation for a chance on that prize.  Feel free to donate as much as you like.  The fundraiser is run by volunteer travel bloggers so all money minus a small PayPal fee goes directly to buildOn.  All donations are tax-deductible.

We just got done making donations for our five favorite prizes, brought to you by some of our favorite travel bloggers!  Looking for some inspiration, stop by and read the details about our choices, then visit the full prize catalog and pick your own.

  • $300 to spend at the Choice Hotel of your choosing, brought to us by Kidventurous.  We like this one because Choice Hotels are located near many of our friends and family so we are sure to be able to put them to good use.
  • A night at the Hotel Vermont and breakfast for two at their signature restaurant Juniper hosted by our fellow New England family travel Find and Go Seek.
  • Two nights and breakfast for two guests at the  Toronto Marriott Bloor Yorkville hosted by Yummy Mummy Club.  Have we mentioned that we’ve been to Toronto twice this year (so far) for hockey tournaments… this would be a great place to warm up after a cold day at the rink!
  • A three-night stay in a Two Bedroom Deluxe Suite at the  Ocean Club Resorts in Providenciales, Turks & Caicos Islands, British West Indies, brought to us by Trekaroo.  This is going to be a popular prize but hey, who wouldn’t want to get a free family beach vacation!
  • The Emperor 85L internal frame backpack by Guerrilla Packs, hosted by Art of Adventuring.  The Princess is interested in studying geology at college so this would be great for fieldtrips!

This is just a small selection of the available prizes — and, if there is nothing that suits your fancy you can make a donation without taking a chance on a prize.  Thanks again to all the great travel bloggers who are supporting Passports with Purpose this year!

This year’s Passports With Purpose travel blogger fund raiser set a goal to raise $80,000 to build two libraries in Zambia in collaboration with Room to Read.  Over the course of two weeks, donations came in by the thousands, $10 at a time, and when it was over we made our goal and passed it by almost $10,000.    As of  today, the total was $89,699!  Needless to say, the almost 100 bloggers who participated are thrilled and its all thanks to you our readers and sponsors.

Travel with Teens and Tweens was honored to host the prize of a one day Family Pass for 4 donated by the Monkey Trunks Extreme high ropes and zipline aerial adventure centers in Chocorua, NH, Weirs Beach, NH and Saco, Maine.   Monkey Trunks Extreme is a must do activity for families with teens and tweens who make summer visits to New England.  If you haven’t been there be sure to check out our review from when we visited the Chocorua, NH location.

We had a wonderful family day when we visited Monkey Trunks Extreme and we know that our prize winner, Steve Pratt of the More Kids Than Suitcases blog will have a great time too, no matter which location his family chooses to visit during the summer of 2012.

Passports with Purpose provides a wonderful opportunity for the travel blogger community to unite for a good cause.  Almost 100 readers won fabulous prizes but the biggest winners are the children of Zambia who will have many more opportunities to read.

Thanks to everyone who donated for a chance to win the Monkey Trunks Extreme Family Pass for 4 and thanks to the truly wonderful Passports with Purpose organizers including Debbie Dubrow of Delicious Baby , Michelle Duffy of Wandermom, Pam Mandel of Nerd’s Eye View and Beth Whitman of Wanderlust and Lipstick. We’d also like to thank the Passport with Purpose program sponsors: Round the World with Us, Traveller’s Point, and HomeAway who helped push us over the top.

Its been a good year here at Travel with Teens and Tweens, we wish all our readers a happy holiday full of lots of family travel adventures.

Our Five Favorite Passports with Purpose Prizes for 2011

With just a week to go, the annual travel blogger Passports with Purpose fund raiser has passed the $33, 000 mark, but we still need many more donations to reach our goal of $80,000 to build two libraries in Zambia in partnership with Room to Read.   How are we going to get there?  With your support of course!

If you haven’t made a donation yet, its time to head on over to the Passports with Purpose donation page and make a $10 pledge for each prize you would like to win.  Dream big, there are luxury hotel stays, international tours, passes for all kinds of family fun, luggage, and more.  Donations will only be accepted until 11:59 pm PST on Friday December 16, 2011.  All prizes will be awarded just in time for Christmas, by December 23.  There are 88 prizes available this year, and the chance of winning any one prize depends on how many others make a donation for that prize.

With all these options, it was hard to narrow it down, but we came up with our own list of five favorites, and put our money down.  We hope this list will get you excited about supporting Passports with Purpose too!

Monkey Trunks Extreme King Kong Zone

Monkey Trunks Extreme King Kong Zone

  • The Monkey Trunks Extreme Family Pass for 4 to spend a day  at one of their high ropes and zipline aerial adventure centers in Chocorua, NH, Weirs Beach, NH and Saco, Maine. We had the opportunity to spend some time at the flagship Monkey Trunks Extreme location in Chocorua, NH a while back. At the time our princess was 13 years old. She loved the King Kong zone with its multi-level high ropes course, 40-foot drop zone and high power zipline.   Monkey Trunks Extreme is our sponsor and we are grateful for their support.  If you are planning a trip to New Hampshire or Maine next summer with  kids of almost any age this should be on your must do list!  It is listed in the “Tours” section on the Passports with Purpose donation page.
  • 110,000 Hyatt Gold Passport Points showcased by Loyalty Traveler.  This is a pretty amazing prize.  We love Hyatt hotels and with this many points we could book 5 nights at premium properties like the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort or the Park Hyatt Paris Vendome.  The points can be used at any participating Hyatt property around the world and the number of points per night varies with the property.  These same 110,000 points could get us 22 nights at the Bali Hyatt Indonesia or 7 nights at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco.  What a great prize!
  • Three nights at the Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans, hosted by A Traveler’s Library.  The $900 certificate is valid Sunday-Thursday nights. (Excludes Friday and  Saturday nights and Special Events/ Blackout Dates.) The certificate includes  room & tax charges.  Camera Guy and Mary T have wanted to visit New Orleans for a long time.  This would be the perfect getaway to take during a week when the teens are busy with service trips or summer camps!

•   A 3-night stay in 2 bedroom deluxe unit at the Wyndham Bonnet Creek, located in Lake Buena Vista, just minutes from the gates of Walt Disney World®.   With free transportation to the park and a great on site pool, including a lazy river, this prize would definitely get us back to Disney ASAP.  Thanks so much to The Culture Mom for hosting this one!

 •   For Camera Guy, we had to enter to win the StreetWalker HardDrive Pro Camera & Laptop Backpack from Think Tank Photo, hosted by Writing Travel.   Finally, a single bag that can carry everything electronic and digital that he needs to take on the road.  This slim, lightweight backpack holds a 15” laptop plus a pro-size DSLR camera and attached 70-200 2.8 lens with hood.  Hoping this one turns up under our Christmas tree!

Remember that Passports with Purpose is a limited time opportunity, ending at 11:50 pm PST on December 16, 2011.  Don’t delay! This is the fourth holiday season the travel blogger community, and our many travel partners, have rallied to help improve the lives of children in developing countries around the world via the Passports with Purpose fund raiser. The program started small with a handful of bloggers raising $7,500 for Heifer International in 2008. In 2009, 90 bloggers raised $30,000 to help build a school in Cambodia. Last year, over 100 bloggers raised about $65,000 to build 25 homes in the small village of Karunganni in South India. This year, the goal is $80,000 to build two libraries in Zambia in partnership with Room to Read.

How It Works

Each participating blogger features a travel-related prize donated by a generous sponsor. This year there are more than 100 prizes available that include a wide range of getaways, lodging options, activity passes, travel gear and more. Visit the donation page and see the full list. Need more details?  Just click through the prize link and visit the travel blogger hosting the prizes for all the specifics, then go back to Passports with Purpose to enter for a chance to win your favorites. It’s just $10 per entry, per prize. The odds of winning a specific prize depend on how many $10 donations are made for that specific offering. Spend as much as you like – it all goes to a good cause!

Climb High with Monkey Trunks Extreme!

This is our second year participating in Passports with Purpose and we are thrilled to host a great family oriented prize donated by our sponsor: the Monkey Trunks Extreme high ropes and zipline aerial adventure in Chocorua, NH, Weirs Beach, NH and Saco, Maine. We had the opportunity to spend some time at the flagship Monkey Trunks Extreme location in Chocorua, NH a while back. At the time our princess was 13 years old. She loved the King Kong zone with its multi-level high ropes course, 40-foot drop zone and high power zipline. The 65-foot high Jungle course – think obstacle course in the tree canopy – was a thrill as well. (Note that the Jungle course is only available in Chocorua.) This is definitely a don’t miss activity if you are visiting New Hampshire or Maine with teens and tweens!

Monkey Trunks Extreme has graciously donated at Family Pass for 4 – good at any one of their three locations.  The pass is good for as many hours as your family of 4 wants to spend at any one of the Monkey Trunks Extreme locations during a single visit. The Family Pass for 4 is worth $179. If your family enjoys your visit as much as we did, you’ll be talking about it for a long time. See the full review from our Monkey Trunks Extreme visit here.
